20 days!
Today's #30boatsin30days is a lanteen: A long triangular sail set on long yard going from one end of the boat to another.
Sometimes they are twice as long as the length of the ship! And they were the favorite sail during the Age of Enlightenment! #boatsforpapa

21 days and counting
Today's #30boatsin30days is a "skiff." Skiffs are basically small boats, but there are many types of skiffs.

26 days and a tugboat to prove it
Day 26: Today's addition to #30boatsin30days is a tugboat!
Tugboats are really amazing. They are these tough stout little boats that guide ships in and out of port, tow barges, help disabled vessels, and dredge and salvage equipment. They are pretty extraordinary. Just goes to show you the power that comes from even the smallest things.

27 days to go!
Hey all
We are four days in... so 27 days until book launch day. Today's boat is a fishing boat.
Even though I don't draw hyper-realistically I use a lot of reference material when drawing for inspiration and so I don't forget important details. For this boat I found a photograph online of a lovely and cute green fishing boat and I knew it had to be part of my #30boatsin30days fleet!

Done!
Well I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm done with my illustrations for my first picture book "Boats For Papa." I sent off my paintings this week and they arrive safely at Roaring Brook Press (cocooned in tape and bubble wrap)! This has been an incredible experience. I still can hardly believe that it happened. I guess when i get a copy in hand I'll finally believe it. I gathered up my painting test pages when I was cleaning up my book stuff and enjoyed the view! I still think there's more laying around somewhere I overlooked...
This has been an immeasurably rewarding and fulfilling process and I can't wait to get started on the next book! But, I think I've earned the weekend off so I'm heading to the art museum to see some Franz Von Stuck and get a hamburger with Aaron!

Woo Hoo!!!
Hey Everyone!
It's official! I sold my first picture book!!! With the help of my AMAZING agent, Alexandra Penfold, Boats For Papa (previously titled Drift if you saw earlier posts on my blog) will be published by Roaring Brook Press in 2015! I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited, can you tell? I have the honor and privilege of working with the also A-MA-ZING Neal Porter who will be my editor on the book. I feel like I've won the lottery! I've been bursting at the seams to tell everyone and the day has finally come! I can breath and shout and dance around!
Here's a link to the announcement in Publisher's Weekly:

This is my lifelong dream of becoming a children's book writer and illustrator and it's becoming a reality. Today is a VERY good day. Thanks for all of your support!!!

North Wind illustration
Hey all
Here is another book illustration I worked up.
This is probably the third iteration of this idea. It's from another picture book I'm working on that is a modern retelling of the "North Wind," an old children's tale that is one of my old favorites. I like the Inn a lot, not sure about the squirrel and the frog. But I think it's an amusing image anyway.
Thanks for looking!

Illustration Friday: Prepare
Howdy!
This week's illustration Friday theme is "Prepare."
I tried to think of just preparing something rather than for something. So naturally cooking comes to mind. Now I think I'll make some cupcakes!
Enjoy!
