I've really been into woodland creatures and settings in the woods lately. I finished this illustration last week that was inspired by Huckleberry Finn. I was thinking about how much fun it would be to camp out on Jackson Island and some nice gumbo cooking over a fire to share with my best friend.

Hey all
So here is a drawing I recently did for a friends birthday. It's a portrait of her and her family as if they were from the 1960's. It's very fitting because they practically are from the 60's. They love all things hip and cool, Danish furniture, vinyl, mid-century everything. I tried to draw them in a retro stylized way to enhance the concept.

The image isn't super high rez though, but you get the idea. It is done in the same style as one of my picture books I've written and illustrated, The Teleportation of Gil Perez. Here are a few images from that book:

This week's topic for Illustration Friday is "Forward." I think about when you are a kid and you are staring at someone or something in class and your teacher says "eyes forward." In this instance this class of wolves sees the new student in the class. I'm not sure if the narrative works better with one of the desks empty or not. Any thoughts?

This is probably the third iteration of this idea. It's from another picture book I'm working on that is a modern retelling of the "North Wind," an old children's tale that is one of my old favorites. I like the Inn a lot, not sure about the squirrel and the frog. But I think it's an amusing image anyway.

Hey all
So I had my first portfolio crit the other day at my first local SCBWI meeting! It went well, considering that I just honed in on my style that I'd like to do for picture books. I got a lot of good feedback and encouragement! It's been a lot of exploring and a lot of fails since the conference in LA, but it's all been very good. AND with the help of my awesome husband pushing me to realize that I've had my "style" there all along, but I just haven't been applying to picture books- out our house we call that "not thinking fourth dimensionally." I look forward to doing more in this style for Illustration Friday work as well, to help build up a continuity with all my work. So here are some samples of what I've worked up. Enjoy! Winter Slow Down vs. 2012 ramp up!

Hey everyone!
Just wanted to quickly check in! It's been a couple of weeks since my last post. The holidays were in full effect and I went out of town. I did in fact get a chance to do some drawing over the break which is good, but I hadn't gotten to upload anything while I was gone. I did keep up with my Illustration Friday work but did not post it.That said, as the new year is upon up, there will be more to come this week! For the time being, here is a piece that I was commissioned to do for a Christmas present:

The gentleman saw some work of mine from our yeti show at work and commissioned me to draw his family at Yetis, something he said he always wanted to see. After some recent experience doing some portraits, I decided that the best thing to do if you are going to draw someone, is to meet them in person. It's so hard to hone in on the essence of someone that you've never met through a stiff photograph. So I went to the house of the family pretending that I was there working on a photography project about families- so the portrait was a surprise to everyone. The family was a hoot and I feel like I captured their essence and likeness pretty well!

I've also made a lot of headway with my graphic novel. I finished the first section. Now onto edits and part 2. I'll post some more pages soon so you can see another vignette from the book. Now I'm off to work on some illustrations for my first portfolio crit with the local chapter of SCBWI this coming week.

I was very into the topic of conjoined twins for a long time. After a couple of weeks of Illustration Friday silence due to getting ready for the Artache Art Flea Market, I'm back in full effect. A lot of time too I at least do the drawings even without posting them, usually because they are still in sketch form. Here is a fun contribution for this week's theme, vanity.

I love the idea that this boogery little guy is vain. He's gross, but I do think he's kind of cute. I used watercolor and pencil on this. I really like my treatment of the watercolor. I've been trying to use pencil more in this way, almost like pen, but with a little enhancement of shading.

Here is a sketch I did for Illustration Friday this week. I'm getting it up pretty late, but I was having a hard time focusing on something that wouldn't involve bugs scattering. I finally came up with this image a boy hitting a pinata. It's a cute sketch and could become a really nice finished piece. I like the contrast of the gray and the color.

Here's another piece from my latest exploration. I'm really getting into combining pen with watercolor in this new way. I keep drawing these weird little monsters and I'm not sure what they are wanting from me. It's like David Bowie says "Scary monsters, and super creeps keep me running, running scared." I'm not so much scared as curious about this world they live in, I keep uncovering things about it. Like this guy, he is a software developer. I'm not sure what he's developing, but he's having technical problems.

Yeti fever!

I thought I would post this recent illo that I did on inspiration of my friend Steve's request for Yeti's for our gallery wall at work. I work at a design firm in Seattle called Hornall Anderson and we have a wall in our office that we use as an internal "gallery" called The Kathleen Turner Overdrive Gallery (if you've seen High Fidelity, you'll get the reference). It serves very much like a gallery where our curator, Steve Quenell, announces a new theme every month and then we have an opening of the gallery every First Thursday. This month's theme is Yeti's because Steve is addicted to them. So when I heard this for some reason I though instantly "Yeti Jamboree." Makes perfect sense to me. I actually did this piece first then went on to make the illo that I posted earlier in the week for Illustration Friday. I'm really stoked about these hairy critters! They are done in watercolor and pen. And I think going to one of their parties would be awesome. It even gave me a good idea for a children's book...I hope you enjoy!

Hello!
I am on vacation this week, but I am still dedicated to my latest venture of participating in Illustration Friday! I was very lucky that my in-laws have a scanner so I could participate while out of town. This week's topic is "Disguise." I didn't want to do something really obvious, so I tried to make it slightly more subtle. And I am still trying to grow my children's book portfolio pieces, so I wanted to do something that could fit into that genre. This is pretty rough as the paper in my sketchbook isn't that conducive for watercolor. I'd like to re-work and re-fine this piece when I get back home. But I thought it was fun even though it's rough.

Every Sunday my husband and I go to coffee and draw. We will work on projects, just stuff for fun or practice, sometimes freelance work. There is usually a Jumble break involved and if we have an extra $2, banana bread for me.

Today I drew this truck that was parked across the street. I find that drawing cars, trucks, and other machinery is very hard. I assume it has something to do with the fact that I am a girl. It's easier if I tell myself that than just merely I can't figure out how to draw these things. Anyway, this one turned out pretty good I think. Yes I know the tires are too small. I'm telling myself it's a low-rider or some sort of pimped ride that requires tiny wheels. It's a Dodge in case you were wondering. I forgot to write the words on the tailgate. At least I know what a tailgate is.

Hello world!
I haven't updated my blog in quite a looooooong time as there are about 7 million ways of communicating socially. But I'm back up and running and will be updating regularly! So here are my latest adventures over the past 8 months, just to catch you up:

--I am currently working on my first graphic novel (I say 'first' because I already want to make more!). It's called Diary of a Wiener. It's a graphic memoir of my life mixed in with some dreams, memories, and daily life.

--I just launched my latest website: diaryofawiener.com a website dedicated to the cartoons from my visual diary, Diary of a Wiener, that I have been doing for the past seven and a half years. This was what helped inspire my graphic novel.

--I have been back making French Lessons, a comic written by my friend Alex Allred and drawn by moi. The comic teaches very random French phrases through food doing weird things. French Lessons has appeared multiple times in Seattle's The Stranger weekly newspaper.

--I participated in The Seattle Weekly's Artopia event (to raise money for the local organization Coyote Central) by painting a newspaper box that is now located by the Space Needle!

--I just returned from my first SCBWI conference in L.A. and what an amazing experience that was! I learned so much, heard and met amazing writers and illustrators, met great new friends and future colleagues! In a nutshell it blew my mind. I am so excited to really throw myself into the career I've always wanted to get into: writing and illustrating great picture books! So look out world! (The above picture is the desert from our luncheon: a chocolate book FILLED with delicious cream and berries! It was their 40th Anniversary of having the conference! ) This was the best birthday present I could have ever given myself!

What's to come?
-Like I said, I am working on my first graphic novel, so you'll have to look out for that. You can't rush something like this, so it could be a while. It's been close to 9 months since I started it, so we'll just have to see how much longer it takes!

- Future updates on where I am at with my picture book adventure and the like!

-A new website! YAY! I'm pretty excited for that! My WONDERFUL and talented husband, Aaron Bagley, is helping me re-design my website, so it's more focused and better functioning, but don't worry, it will still have hotdogs! So stay tuned for that as well!

What are you doing on this gray Thursday? I know, you are going to go out and see new art by Seattle artist (and my husband) Aaron Bagley! Bagley is showing his latest work from his cutout series at Faire Gallery and Cafe (1351 East Olive Way in Seattle). The show is a bizarre romp through Bagley's exploration in nature, shapes, and familiar textures in an unfamiliar form.

CHOP SUEY APRIL 30th

Hey dude and dudettes!

Here is your chance to be cool! My friend Matt Cory will be playing with his band Half Acre Day at Chop Suey on April 30th. It's only 7 bones and the doors are at 8:00. They really put on a great show! Think New Pornographers, but less sunbeams and more space ships.

Matt ended up using an image of mine for their poster for the show.The actual drawing is like 3 1/2 feet by 4 1/2 feet. The poster is poster sized. The music is bigger than it all!

Gibson won and Gibson too

Hey campers!

So my friend Gibson is a crazy performance artist dude who is always doing really cool, totally non-sequitter type of "examinations of life" I guess is what you would call them.

For instance, once he wore a pair of red pants for 30 days and wouldn't tell people why or what he was doing. All the while he was documenting the process of wearing red pants for 30 days and then recorded it into a book and had a website made for it.

Then he walked from his home in Greenwood Seattle to his place of work that was 20 or so miles away, just to see what it would be like- all the while documenting in photographs his trek up north.

One of his more recent art attacks involved him and a good friend Matt Cory. The two invited all of their friends to an art show called "Do Narwhals have Blowholes?" at the Hiawatha Lofts in Seattle. We all showed and admired framed and mounted art that Matt had illustrated that accompanied the story (words by Gibson.) At a certain time everyone present was asked to be seated where they proceeded to show a slide show of the story as Gibson read it. Then he announced to the room that it was actually a book and they published it, and it was for sale! (And totally awesome I must add! And you can buy it at Amazon.com)

Those are just a few of the cool projects he has done. And he is now launching another project: Gibson vs. Gibson which will be a series of "events" I guess involving him and his Australian counterpart (also Gibson) in feats that are meant to temp fate, gravity and the space time continuum.

The first flirtation with destiny will commence Sunday March 8th at 0030 GMT, where each on their own continent, will simultaneously jump off of a swing.

So I ride the bus all the time now and I see the craziest stuff. I see disgusting stuff, scary stuff, stinky stuff, etc. But one morning a few weeks ago I bumped into something so strange I had to record it. I got onto the bus carrying a box, so my view was a lit obstructed and the bus was really crowded so I was mostly concerned with just finding a seat- not who was on the bus. So I managed to nab a seat right up in the front and as I sat down I bumped into the guy next to me, as I turned to say I'm sorry, I looked at what was in his hands and it was a sculpture of this.

It was about a foot long and it was of a male doll reaching towards it's other arm attached to a some sort of cube. The doll looked like a black G.I. Joe that was taken apart.

He later got off at the stop for the Art Institute of Seattle.

Time Magazine!

Hey all!
Yesterday was a HUGE day for my husband, Aaron! The issue of Time Magazine in which a piece of his art is in just came out! Aaron made a label for a bottle of champagne for election day if Barack Obama won. The fake champagne label was an homage to Obama's victory in the style of the Dom Perignon. A friend of his at work, Maika Keuben, was contacted by Time Magazine when the saw the picture she took of the bottle on her flicker. It's their Person of the Year issue and the bottle is among other artists' works dedicated to Obama. So check it out! You can see the label up close on page 37 and then the pull bottle on page 45. I'm so proud that Aaron's art is in a major national magazine AND also proud because we got to drink the champagne in celebration!

November is HOT HOT HOT!

So as you may be fully aware (by the title) this November is steaming with goodness. The presidential election is over- woo hoo! -and ended well I might add. AND the latest issue Nickelodeon Magazine is out where you can see a gag comic that I did (of the Statue of Liberty). November also hosts my 2nd wedding anniversary-woo hoo!- AND Thanksgiving. Who could ask for anything more? Toyota.

Hola! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Just thought I'd be a good blogger and give a quick update on my blog of the latest "haps" that are going on with me. The latest issue of Seattle's The Stranger features a collaborative drawing that my husband Aaron Bagley and I did for an article about life in Seattle from a non-Seattleite's perspective by Tao Lin. Aaron and I frequently collaborate on drawings in a series that we call "Duet."We've been drawing together so long now, most of the time we can't tell who drew what on each drawing. We try to have a show of new work about once a year. You can see more work from "Duet" on my website as well as Aaron's, www.aaronbagley.com. You should check out his website anyway, he's got lots of great drawings, paintings and comics on there.

We currently have some collaborate sculpture's of little galleries for sale and display at The Hideout, our favorite hidden bar in Capitol Hill (located at 1005 Boren Ave, Seattle). The work is in The Hideout's new art vending machine called E.A.R.L. Check it out if you are in the neighborhood, or go out of your way to go there if you are not in the neighborhood. The Hideout is a great place for great drinks, clandestine meetings in dim light, and floor to super-high ceilings of amazing art. Huzzah! My blog is up!

Hey everybody!

This is officially the new blog feature for my website! I can now inform you of the latest "haps" that are going on in the world of Jessixa. Until some other structural changes to the website are made, I will be reporting all upcoming shows, events, publications, announcements, recipes, math equations, dance moves, mental ramblings etc. right here.

Um... What else? I don't really have anything else to say at this point. Um... I can also now officially update my resume and bio myself, thanks to my fabulous web manager Peet.

Um... I've been keep up with the current season of America's Next Top Model.

I uh... tried almond milk for the first time today.
